Creating photographic imagery is a process of discovery. Through the last few months, members of our class collaborated in this process of discovery to tell our separate stories, fine tune our myriad messages and deliver a set of images as our “collective vision.”

A little bit about how this process unfolded:

At the beginning of the quarter, we shared our previous work with class members, in order to see the varied paths each of us had followed in our photographic practices. With class input, each of us then chose one story to tell and worked on a portfolio – a collection of images – that we hoped would deliver that story as a strong visual message.

After several weeks of honing that personal message behind the camera, within the darkroom and in front of our computers, we came together again to examine whether we had succeeded in capturing our vision. In supportive and honest group critiques under the masterful guidance of our professor, Kate Jordahl, we discussed directions in which each photographer might grow in order to make our stories even stronger.

Then we went back into the world to further hone our messages, drawing upon the support we had received within the class to find our visual statements. Finally, after weeks of refining our art and discussing our images, we each delivered a coherent portfolio of work that reflected our own personal statement.

From these distilled portfolios, each of us now presents a single image representing the essence of our message. Every image you observe on the wall represents weeks of discussion, contemplation, and review.

With the relentless flood of visual input from selfies, Instagram and Facebook, many proclaim that photography as an art has lost its meaning. We as a group challenge you to reject that premise. Together we invite you to share our stories and we hope these images speak not only to our vision but also evoke something for you. Through this process, with our viewers’ involvement, we create our collective vision.
